Seasonal· Saronic Gulf· Greece — Ionian, Saronic & Argolic
Saronic Meltemi (mid-July to late August)
37° 42.0′ N · 23° 36.0′ E · approximate
The summer northerly reaches the Saronic from about mid-July to late August — but far tamer than in the Cyclades, which is why the gulf is the classic family charter ground.
Practical
Position approx: Saronic Gulf centre (Wikipedia). Along the Attica coast from the Corinth Canal to Sounion, and between Methana and Attica, it blows at most Force 4–6 from NNE–NE, with a more northerly component near the mountainous west coast; weaker around Methana and Poros, stronger toward Cape Sounion. Early season is often nearly windless apart from a light afternoon SE scirocco. Charter bases describe typical summer N–NNE Force 3–4. Use Sounion bay to wait out a strong meltemi before crossing to Kea.
