Paxos Olive Grove Walks (Ostries & Old Paths)

39° 11.6′ N · 20° 10.2′ E

Paxos is criss-crossed by old donkey tracks between dry-stone walls, olive groves and tiny chapels. The Ostries path from Bogdanatika, near Gaios, is a short, easy walk that ends at a clifftop over Avlaki and Agrilas Bay.

Practical

Coordinate is the Ostries trailhead (Paxos Map), opposite the church of the Virgin in Bogdanatika, about 2 km from Gaios. The path passes villas, olive groves and a large old stone laundry cistern before reaching a rocky precipice; it is ideal for sunset. Longos also has an 'Old Donkey Track' footway (OSM). The Paxos Festival runs guided nature and cultural walks in summer, and a sailing guide recommends spring for hiking the old paths to chapels and hilltops. Carry water; there is little shade on the limestone.

Best for

Stretching your legs in the olive groves on a harbour day

Season

Best Apr-Jun and Sep-Oct; hot at midday in summer
