NW Maistro & West-Coast Swell (Paxos)

39° 12.0′ N · 20° 10.0′ E · approximate

In summer the prevailing breeze on this coast is the maistro, a NW thermal wind that is light in the morning and evening and builds through the afternoon. It is why the Paxos east-coast harbours are sheltered, and why the west-coast caves are a morning-only trip.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: it is the Paxos centroid from Wikipedia and is only a label position. A Marinelink port page names the summer 'Maistros (northwesterly)'. Boote notes the area is only lightly windy in summer mornings and evenings, and recommends doing the west side early, before the thermals build swell. Visit Greece warns that westerly winds make the caves dangerous. Northerlies send swell into Lakka, Longos and Mongonisi; NE winds blow straight into Lakka. Check the forecast before the Corfu-Paxos and Paxos-mainland crossings.
