Mandraki Bay (Hydra)

37° 21.3′ N · 23° 29.0′ E

Hydra's old naval harbour, a mile east of town, once guarded by forts on both capes — one is still conspicuous. It holds the island's only all-sand beach, now run by the Mandraki Beach Resort.

Practical

Sailingissues anchorage marker; OSM also charts an anchorage symbol here. Moderate holding and susceptible to swell; lines ashore to the rocks are the standard technique in the area. Facing north, it is no place to be in a strong northerly. The beach is organised (sunbeds, bar-restaurant, water sports) and is the only beach on Hydra with purpose-built toilets, showers and changing rooms; the resort runs beach boats to town every half hour and the boat is free after 8 pm for dinner guests. On foot it is about 20 minutes along the coast road to Hydra harbour. Good overflow anchorage when the town quay is full.

Best for

Overflow anchorage within walking distance of town, sandy swim

Season

Settled weather or southerlies; swell in northerlies
