Anogi & Kathara Monastery
38° 24.9′ N · 20° 40.8′ E · approximate
The old high village of Ithaca (about 500 m up) with a frescoed Byzantine church of the Panagia and the 8 m Arakli menhir, and nearby the hilltop Monastery of Panagia Kathariotissa (katholikon 1530, rebuilt 1696) looking down over Vathi, the Molos gulf and the sea on both sides.
Practical
Coordinate approx: between Anogi village and the monastery, estimated; Anogi is 16 km NW of Vathi by road. A marked trail runs from Kioni up to Anogi/Kathara and on to Stavros (SailingIssues). Bell tower near the monastery entrance has the best view. No accommodation in Anogi. Carry water — it's a long climb in summer heat.
