Angelokastro

39° 40.7′ N · 19° 41.2′ E

A Byzantine castle on a 305 m crag above the sea north of Paleokastritsa that never fell in centuries of sieges — Corfu's capital from 1387 to the late 16th century and a refuge for villagers during Ottoman raids.

Practical

Coordinate from Wikipedia. Reach it by road or path from Lakones/Krini, then a steep walk up to the summit chapel; bring water and good shoes. First documented in 1272 (Wikipedia). Formed the island's defensive triangle with Kassiopi and Gardiki castles.

Best for

A short, steep climb with the best view in north-west Corfu
