Vathy (Samos Town) Harbour

37° 45.3′ N · 26° 58.6′ E

The island capital sits at the head of a deep, beautiful bay; its small yacht harbour in the SE corner is secure but tiny, so most visiting yachts lie on the town quay near the mole.

Practical

The small marina is very secure but takes only boats up to about 9 m and is mostly fishing boats. Elsewhere the harbour is open to the N-NW meltemi, and if the wind swings south in summer a strong, potentially dangerous fetch builds. Moor alongside or stern-to near the mole - close to the ferries, so scope is uncomfortably short - or anchor off under the mole (extended 1998); soft mud, not very good holding, use two anchors (one set against a south wind). In strong southerlies anchor off at the SE side of the bay. A Coast Guard officer will ask you to pay harbour dues at their office, and they usually object to stays of more than a few days. Water and electricity outlets exist but are often not working. Fuel by small tanker is hard to arrange; a road fuel station is a few blocks north of the small marina. Harbour reported polluted. Details 2017-era - verify locally.
