Stafylos Bay (Skopelos)

39° 5.1′ N · 23° 44.8′ E

A double bay at Skopelos' southern tip, named after the Minoan prince said to have landed here, with a shingle beach, taverna and clear shallow water.

Practical

5–9 m on sand; lines ashore possible; with more than 10 yachts make sure you don't swing into each other. Shelter in SW–SE winds per Sailing Issues; swell can be uncomfortable but not dangerous. Swimming buoys are not always laid. Rocks and reefs good for snorkelling. Taverna 'Stafilos' overlooks the beach; lido and beach bar (Thinking Traveller). A Mycenaean royal tomb was excavated in the Staphylos/Velanio area in 1936 (Wikipedia); the marker ashore is a disappointment. Velanio, next door, became an official nudist beach in 2011.
