Sporades meltemi (moderate)

39° 9.6′ N · 23° 39.0′ E · approximate

The summer northerly (meltemi) reaches the Sporades in a gentler form than in the Cyclades — lively sailing at Force 3–5 most days, with stronger NE spells in July and August.

Practical

Representative point in the Skiathos–Skopelos channel. By month (Filovent): occasional in May (F3–4), moderate June (F4–5), strong July (F5–6, gusts 7), peak August (F5–7, gusts 8), easing September, rare October; Filovent rates exposure in the Sporades as moderate. Dream Yacht describes it as a strong NE wind in July–August with generally mild F3–5 conditions. Effects here: swell into Patitiri and Skopelos town (dangerous entry in strong NE), short seas and funnelling in the Skopelos–Alonissos strait, katabatic gusts at night in Panormos and Planitis. Forecasts: Olympia Radio Pilio VHF 60, NAVTEX Limnos (L), meteo.gr, Poseidon.
