Rhodes Old Town walls walk

36° 26.7′ N · 28° 13.4′ E · approximate

Walk the dry moat and the outer ring of the Knights' fortifications: scarp, counterscarp, bastions and gates, a defensive crescent around the Old Town that has hardly changed since the siege of 1522.

Practical

Position is approx: a point just west of the Grand Master's Palace (Wikipedia coordinates) where the d'Amboise Gate leads out to the moat; walk the circuit in either direction. Wikipedia: the fortifications were frozen at 1522, making Rhodes one of the few European walled towns showing the shift from medieval to gunpowder-age design; the walls total about 4 km. Wear shoes for uneven ground and carry water in summer. Opening of the moat path and the wall-top walk varies, so check locally.
