Petra Harbour & Bay (Lesvos)

39° 19.8′ N · 26° 10.5′ E

A long sandy beach town under a 40 m rock crowned by the church of Panagia Glykofilousa, 2 nm south of Molyvos — quieter than its famous neighbour and a port of entry for yachts from Turkey.

Practical

Coordinate is the bay anchorage off Petra (Grecosailor): excellent sand, anchored in 5.5 m with 28 m chain; calm in light variable winds. One guide gives 5–10 m sand with moderate holding on this coast, exposed to northerlies. A Noonsite report (2018) says Petra became a port of entry in 2017, is used by Turkish day boats and yachts, and is 'better scaled to yachts than Mytilini' — port police and Customs at Petra, but DEKPA and remaining formalities were done at Mithymna (Molyvos). Climb the 114 steps to Panagia Glykofilousa (church on the rock since at least 1609, present building 1747); the 18th-century Vareltzidaina mansion sits at the base. Beach bars line the front.
