Moudros Bay (Lemnos)

39° 51.1′ N · 25° 14.6′ E

One of the great natural harbours of the Aegean, the vast bay that sheltered the Allied fleets of the Gallipoli campaign and where the 1918 Armistice of Mudros was signed aboard HMS Agamemnon — today a quiet expanse of sand-bottomed coves.

Practical

Coordinate is the Fanaraki anchorage on the south side of the bay (Grecosailor): white sand in 2–3 m, a welcome respite from northerlies, close enough to Moudros for a visit. Other coves: Chavouli (39.8399, 25.2621; sand, good holding, still feels strong northerlies) and Parthenomytos (39.8278, 25.2830; endless sand in 2–3 m, very secure in strong northerlies). The bay, its islets and Chortarolimni/Alyki lagoons are a Natura 2000 site (GR4110006). Shoals extend from the shores — keep to charted depths.

Best for

Huge sheltered bay with history and empty anchorages

Season
