Milies–Kala Nera Railway & Kalderimi Loop (Pelion)

39° 19.7′ N · 23° 9.0′ E

A classic half-day loop from Milies: follow the old Pelion narrow-gauge railway line toward the Pinakates station, drop down to Kala Nera for a swim and lunch on the gulf, then climb back on an old stone kalderimi path. Vyzitsa, a stone village with a great plane tree on its square, is 1.6 km west of Milies.

Practical

Trekking Hellas lists the Milies – Kala Nera – Milies loop at 11.9 km (7.4 mi), about 1,329 ft (405 m) of ascent, 5 hours. From a boat anchored off Kala Nera, walk it in reverse: up the kalderimi to Milies, then back down. The De Chirico steel railway bridge over the Taxiarchis stream is just outside Milies station (OpenStreetMap), and the line was built in 1895–1903 by Evaristo de Chirico (Wikipedia). Vyzitsa's square is 1.6 km west of Milies by straight line (OpenStreetMap positions). Go early in summer, carry water and wear proper shoes on the slippery cobbles. The position is the OpenStreetMap Milies village node.

Best for

A morning walk from a Kala Nera anchorage up to the mountain villages

Season
