Mesta Village (Chios)

38° 15.6′ N · 25° 55.4′ E

A perfectly preserved medieval village-fortress of the mastic villages: a pentagonal ring of houses forming the outer wall, with vaulted alleys so narrow two people barely pass.

Practical

4 km inland from Limenas Meston (taxi +30 6972 543 543; walk takes about an hour uphill). Probably 12th-century, walls reinforced under the Genoese 1346-1566 (Wikipedia). Mesaionas taverna on the central square serves good local food (CruisersWiki; greektravel). The mastic villages are on UNESCO's intangible heritage list for mastic cultivation.
