Kali Strata to Chorio (Symi)
36° 36.8′ N · 27° 50.4′ E
The grand stone staircase from the harbour up to Chorio (Ano Symi): hundreds of steps past neoclassical mansions, ruined captains' houses and tiny cafés. It leads to a maze of lanes, the Historical Museum and the Kastro.
Practical
Pin is on the Kali Strata (OSM node for the Kali Strata restaurant near the top). Visitors on Greeka count more than 450 steps; one counted 462. Go early morning or near sunset in summer and take water. A bar near the top is a welcome stop. The renovated Historical Museum in Chorio reopened in 2020 (Wikipedia; Sailing Issues calls it a must). From Chorio a 20–25 minute track leads down to Pedi Bay. Wear proper shoes on Symi's paths: in June 2024 a British visitor died after taking a wrong path out of Pedi in extreme heat (Wikipedia).
Best for
A morning climb for the view over Gialos
