Fourni Harbour (Fournoi Korseon)
37° 34.7′ N · 26° 28.7′ E
The one real town of the former pirate archipelago between Samos and Ikaria - a working fishing port with the largest fishing fleet in the Aegean, traditional wooden caiques, and lobster tavernas on the quay.
Practical
Not a comfortable harbour: it takes a swell in the meltemi, and the rocky bottom with a thin layer of mud gives poor holding (anchoring off is not recommended). Best berth is alongside the south side of the ferry jetty at the SE side of the harbour (room for two rafted), or the north side when no ferry is in; my-sea reports mooring at the NE town quay in up to 10 m, with a few mooring lines for bow- or stern-to, and suggests rafting on a fishing boat with the owner's agreement. You may berth briefly inside the breakwater with the fishing fleet but can be asked to move. Anchor-mooring outside the breakwater only in very settled weather - open to the NW. A large ferry arrives around 5 am several times a week and surges the harbour; if you are on the ferry jetty the port police will ask you to move off - do it. Water from a tap at the root of the jetty; no electricity, showers or fuel dock (CruisersWiki). Coast Guard VHF 12, tel. +30 22750 51207. Woodwork and diesel-engine repairs possible; bottled gas from a grocery; one taxi (+30 22750 51223).
Best for
Lobster dinner and a real fishing-island town
Season
Uncomfortable in strong meltemi; ferries interrupted in winter gales
