Chorio & Knights' Castle (Halki)

36° 13.2′ N · 27° 35.1′ E

Walk the old road west from Emborio to Chorio, the abandoned medieval village, and climb to the Knights' castle on St Nicholas hill. Pierre d'Aubusson's emblem is over the gate and the views run to Rhodes and Alimia.

Practical

Pin: castle ruins (OSM). Sailing Issues: the castle was built by the Knights of St John in the 15th century over the Hellenistic citadel; it holds the ruins of the medieval church of St Nicholas, and the village below was inhabited until the mid-19th century. Greeka: a paved path climbs up, and three chapels stand at the foot of the castle. About 3 km from Emborio; go early or late in summer and take water (there is no natural water supply on Halki). Trachia's twin beaches are a 20-minute walk on from Chorio.
