Vathi Bay – Galifos Anchorage (Folegandros)

36° 37.7′ N · 24° 53.5′ E · approximate

The deep south-west-facing bay that holds Agkali, Galifos and Agios Nikolaos beaches. It is Folegandros's main alternative to the harbour, sheltered from NW through to E.

Practical

Position approx: the OSM 'Ormos Vathy' bay label, which our coastline check puts about 180 m offshore. Sailing Issues: anchor just south of the Agia Marina church (at Agkali) or 150 m west off Galifos beach. Sheltered from NW to E, but a strong meltemi brings violent gusts, mostly from the NE. George Yachts: 4-5 m of sand and weed with good holding east of Cape Aspropounta, and very strong gusts and swell in the meltemi. Fira beach is another anchoring option, 15 minutes' walk east of Agkali (see Fira Beach Anchorage (Folegandros)). Ashore: tavernas, cafés and a mini-market at Agkali. The bus to Chora runs from Agkali (4 km).

Best for

The overnight alternative to the quay; good in N-E winds below gale

Season
