Sounion Rocky Shore Snorkel (Cape Sounion)

37° 39.2′ N · 24° 1.4′ E · approximate

A swim from the anchored boat along the rocky shore that runs from Sounion beach out under the Temple of Poseidon, with the temple overhead. It is the easiest snorkel of a first or last night at Sounion.

Practical

mySea gives 2–10 m depths in Sounion bay; the bottom in the anchorage is sand and weed, and the snorkelling is along the rocks at the edges of the bay, below the cape on the east side and around Archi islet on the west side. No published snorkel guide for Sounion was found, so expect Saronic-coast rock fish rather than a reef. Swim in the morning before the day boats arrive and before the afternoon northerly gusts; fly a diver-down flag or tow a buoy, because tenders and day-trip boats move through the bay. Landing on the cape rocks to reach the temple is not the way in: use the dinghy jetty and the road. Coordinate is approximate: placed on the rocky shore between the beach (37.65418, 24.02476) and the temple (37.6502, 24.02455), in the water off the east anchorage.

Best for
