Plaka & Kastro Viewpoint (Milos)

36° 44.7′ N · 24° 25.4′ E

Plaka, the island capital, spills down a ridge above Milos Bay, and the ruined Venetian Kastro crowns the hill above it. The climb to the Kastro and the church of Panagia Thalassitra, the sailors' patron, gives the classic sunset view over the whole flooded caldera.

Practical

Greeka: the Venetian castle was built in the 13th century on a hill of about 280 m and abandoned after the 1821 revolution; only ruins remain, with the Mesa Panagia (Skiniotissa) church near the top and the 19th-century Thalassitra church. Wikivoyage: a path climbs from Plaka to the castle and the church of Panagia Skiniotissa. Bring water and go early or for sunset to avoid the heat. From Adamas it is about 5 km by road; take the island bus (about €2 per ride in 2023, per Wikivoyage) or a taxi (Adamas rank +30 22870 22219). Plaka has restaurants, cafés, an Alfa Market and pharmacies.
