Mylopotas Bay (Ios)

36° 42.8′ N · 25° 17.6′ E

A long golden-sand bay 3 km south-east of Chora, lined with beach bars, tavernas, water-sports centres and the island's two campsites. It is the classic Ios day anchorage under the windmill ridge.

Practical

Position from Grecosailor (36°42'47.1"N 25°17'34.5"E): sand, good holding in 6-8 m. Rolly in N-NW swell. Dinghy landing at the north corner, on a wall with steel pegs and rings. In a meltemi the gusts come mainly from N or NE (Sailing Issues). The safest spots are about 400 m west of the beach, under the cliffs of a small double-headed bay, or further west in Kolitsani Cove (see Kolitsani Bay (Ios)). Hazard: the Xeres reef off Cape Xeres lies between the harbour and this bay, so give the cape a wide berth. Ashore: the most organised beach on the island, with loungers, beach bars, fish tavernas and water sports (Visit Ios). Mini-market behind the beach. A dam in the gorge behind the bay supplies the island's water.

Best for
