Meltemi in Milos Bay
36° 42.9′ N · 24° 25.8′ E · approximate
From July to early September the north meltemi decides where you can sleep on Milos: Adamas and the south-coast bays are safe, while the north coast and Pollonia become untenable.
Practical
Sailing Issues: July and especially August (possibly early September) bring meltemi storm days. Adamas has 'excellent protection in NNW–SE winds, even in Meltemia', and the south-coast bays (Provatas, Firiplaka, Tsigrado, Paleochori) are the meltemi anchorages, while Pollonia must be left in strong NW–NE meltemi. The flip side: Adamas and Milos Bay are dangerous in westerlies and southerlies, when Fatourena or Achivadolimni are the refuges. noforeignland notes the meltemi often exceeds 30 knots in July–August and accelerates around headlands. Pin is mid-bay (approx).
