Gavrio Harbour (Andros)

37° 53.1′ N · 24° 44.1′ E · approximate

Andros's ferry port and the first Cycladic harbour on the run down from Rafina (37 nm), a working village quay tucked behind the Gavrionisia islets on the NW coast. Not pretty, but it is the island's most sheltered harbour and a safe place to leave the boat while you tour the green interior by car.

Practical

Berthing: ask the harbour master (Port Authority, Gavrio, tel +30 22820 71213; port police call on VHF 12) for a berth; visiting yachts go stern-to on the designated section of quay between the two ferry piers, which means close-ups of ferries and their wash. MySea gives 3-7 m depth in the harbour. Water and electricity on the quay (Noonsite, 2020); fuel from the road stations a short walk away or by mini-tanker. Shelter: good from the meltemi and tenable in southerlies, but large waves and swell enter in the strongest southerlies. Gusts: strong NW gusts early in the season, NE gusts in high summer. Approach: reefs, islets and rocks on the approach and reefs at the SE side of the entrance; do not arrive at night (numerous unlit reefs and off-lying islands). Ferries come and go at speed in summer. Pin is approx: mid-quay between the ferry piers, placed from OpenStreetMap pier geometry. Fees: municipal port dues may be charged; no current rate found, verify locally.
