Gavrio Bay Anchorage (north corner)

37° 53.2′ N · 24° 43.9′ E · approximate

The safest anchorage on Andros: the north corner of Gavrio bay, out of the ferry turning area, with the village a short dinghy ride away.

Practical

Holding: weed over mud, good (Noonsite); SailingIssues calls the bottom mud with good holding. Lay a second anchor if leaving the boat to explore inland. Shelter: good from the meltemi and tenable in southerlies, though strong NE gusts come down in summer. Keep well clear of the ferry berths and their manoeuvring area; ferries arrive at speed. Avoid entering at night (unlit reefs and islets). Pin is approx: placed in the north part of the bay about 115 m off the shore by OpenStreetMap coastline, not a surveyed anchor spot. Depths: no figure found; sound in.
