Folegandros Chora

36° 37.6′ N · 24° 55.1′ E

A car-free Chora on the lip of a 200 m cliff: a chain of linked squares shaded by trees, whitewashed lanes, and the medieval Kastro whose back walls form the cliff edge. It is one of the most beautiful villages in the Aegean.

Practical

Position from folegandros.gr. It is 3.5 km and about 200 m above Karavostasis; the bus meets every ferry, and there are taxis (+30 694 469 3957). Vehicles are not allowed in the village. Park in the lots at the edge. The Kastro is the oldest part: a medieval fortified settlement, continuously inhabited, whose north side is built on the cliff edge, with houses more than ten centuries old (folegandros.gr). The 15-minute path up to the Panagia church starts at Pounta square. Medical centre +30 22860 41222, pharmacy +30 22860 27640, post office +30 22860 41299.
