Express Samina Wreck & Portes Rocks (Parikia Bay)

37° 5.9′ N · 25° 6.1′ E

The Portes rocks, about 2 nm off Parikia, where the ferry Express Samina struck on the night of 26 September 2000 and sank with the loss of more than 80 lives. Today the wreck is Paros's best-known deep dive and the reason to give these rocks a wide berth.

Practical

Wikipedia gives the location as the charted Portes islets reef in the Bay of Parikia, about 2 nm off the town. Greeka lists the MS Samina at a maximum depth of 35 m, for advanced divers only, through local dive centres. Do not try it independently from your own boat. Under way, give the Portes and the nearby Vouves rocks plenty of room when entering or leaving Parikia Bay, especially at night. Position from the OpenStreetMap 'Portes' rock outline, not the wreck itself.

Best for

Advanced wreck dive with a centre, and a hazard to plot on the way into Parikia
