Andros West-Coast Gusts in Meltemi

37° 51.9′ N · 24° 45.0′ E · approximate

In meltemi season (roughly mid-May to September, peaking July-August) the high mountains of Andros send strong fall winds down onto the lee anchorages of the west and south coasts, Gavrio and Batsi included.

Practical

Early in the season the gusts come from the NW, in the summer months from the NE (SailingIssues, Gavrio). Batsi bay suffers gusts off the land from the east (Noonsite). Meltemi typically Force 4-6 with gusts to Force 7-8, builds late morning, peaks in the afternoon, often eases in the evening; episodes last 3-7 days (Filovent). Andros is rated 'very high' exposure in August; anchor on south coasts and expect gusts off high ground (Filovent). Tactics: lay out maximum scope, set the anchor hard, avoid berthing manoeuvres in the afternoon peak, and cross the Kafireas strait early in the morning. Pin is approx: off the Gavrio-Batsi coast.
