Gas Bottle Refills (Raiatea)

16° 43.8′ S · 151° 26.6′ W

Where to get cooking-gas bottles filled on Raiatea: the Shell station on the Uturoa town quay and Raiatea Carenage at the Uturaerae boatyard.

Practical

The Tahiti Cruisers Guide lists Shell Station Uturoa (GPS -16.729298, -151.443377, alongside the downtown fuel dock) as a propane location. It also lists Raiatea Carenage (-16.735995, -151.485035), which 'will fill tanks' and is one of the few places to refill blue Campingaz bottles. General French Polynesia notes from the same guide: bottles are usually left for filling and may take a few days; rusty bottles can be refused; local regulators use reverse-threaded French fittings, and North American fittings are not sold. One price report from Moorea was 352 XPF/kg plus a 1,000 XPF handling fee for a 6 kg tank (2024; verify locally). Carenage is open Monday to Thursday 7:30am–4:30pm and Friday 7:30am–3:30pm (40 60 05 45, VHF 68). Refill in Raiatea before heading to Maupiti or the outer atolls.
