Ua Huka South-Swell Season

8° 56.7′ S · 139° 34.2′ W · approximate

All of Ua Huka's anchorages open south, so a southerly swell or wind can make them rough or untenable. Experienced cruisers time their visit for a northerly or NE pattern.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: Vaipaee Bay entrance. Kavenga (Soggy Paws): Ua Huka's anchorages are exposed to the south and 'can be rough or even untenable at times'. Jacaranda waited until late October for a northerly forecast after hearing of untenable anchorages and impossible landings when winds were from the southern quadrant. Noonsite: Vaipaee's entrance is daunting in big S-SE seas. Chugach (2019) retreated from Vaipaee to Haavei when the wind went stronger ESE-SE. Check the swell forecast, not just the wind.
