Vaipaee Church Sunday Choir

8° 55.9′ S · 139° 34.6′ W

Vaipaee's simple church, with its little spire and red tin roof, holds a gallery of local wood carving: life-size saints flanking the doors, carved fonts, pulpit and plaques. A giant carved pestle opens to reveal a nativity scene. The Sunday choir is a highlight.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap (Église de l'Immaculée-Conception). It is on the left as you walk into the village. Jacaranda (Oct 2015): Sunday service starts at 8am, with a beautiful choir. Even outside service times go in to see the carvings, made by a local carver and his family. Moon Rebel (2018): 'it alone makes a stop at Vaipaee worthwhile'. Dress modestly.
