Taiohae No-Anchoring Zone

8° 55.1′ S · 140° 5.8′ W · approximate

A legally defined no-anchoring box in the north-east of Taiohae Bay, covering the cruise-ship and cargo quay and its approach out to about 300 m from shore, plus (per Noonsite 2026) a ban on anchoring along the western side of the bay.

Practical

Order 1084/CM of 4 August 2016 fixes the zone at 140°05.91'W / 8°54.74'S to 140°05.89'W / 8°55.31'S to 140°05.74'W / 8°55.33'S (Soggy Paws compendium). Position plotted approx at the centre of that box. Penalties apply and the gendarmerie will ask you to leave. Noonsite (May 2026) adds: the area between the large quay and the small municipal quay is a no-mooring zone; anchoring is prohibited on the western side of the bay; keep clear of the underwater cable. Cargo ships (Aranui, Taporo) and cruise ships use the big quay and swing through this area; cruise-ship tenders make the bay busy.
