Taiohae Artisan Market

8° 54.8′ S · 140° 5.7′ W

The communal artisan centre by the dinghy dock, where Nuku Hiva carvers and jewellers sell wood, stone and bone carvings, shell jewellery and tapa, and where cruise-ship visitors are welcomed with drums and dance.

Practical

Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap 'Maison de l'artisanat' node at the small quay. Closes around 3pm (2020). Cash only (XPF). The tourist office (free wifi, tours, car hire, supply-ship timetables) is next door. Teiki Huukena, author of two books on Marquesan tattoo, runs the Patiki tattoo studio across from the crafts market (about $50/hour in 2020, verify). If a cruise ship is in, don't miss the welcome programme (Noonsite 2026).
