Raroia Sand Bar Anchorage (North of Pass)

16° 0.5′ S · 142° 26.7′ W

A sandbar and reef jutting from the second motu north of the pass, rising to about 35 ft from 60 ft+ water, with much clearer water than the south. Cruisers use it to dinghy over and drift the pass.

Practical

Kokopeli (Nov 2018, Soggy Paws): 16°00.45S / 142°26.70W held OK in coral. A second spot is in the bight between the motu next to the pass on the north side and the next motu north, at 16°00.71S / 142°26.84W: a lighter patch that comes up to about 35 ft (Navionics shows a rock there). The best sand is on the SW side of the shallowest outcrop. Kokopeli swung right around the anchor in 10-20 kt with a passing shear zone, snagged floated chain on coral and had to dive to 70 ft to clear it: carry dive gear. The east side of this northern area has a better shelf than the steep-to west.
