Range Marker Bight Snorkel (South Pass)

16° 30.7′ S · 145° 28.0′ W

A sheltered bight in the reef just past the inner (red) range marker on the south-west side of the pass. It is out of the current, and on the flood it fills with fish and sharks.

Practical

Position 16°30.687'S 145°27.996'W (Jacaranda, July 2016). Shallow, full of bommies and very clear. There are sandy spots about 10 ft deep farther in where you can anchor the dinghy (by the 2016 report; check current rules). Stay out of the channel and there is little current. Good as the finish of a drift: ride the pass in, then slip into the bight. It lies on the protected south-west side, so no yacht anchoring; dinghy visits only.

Best for

Calm-water snorkeling after a pass drift
