World-class sport climbing and a via ferrata on Makatea's 60-100 m limestone cliffs, with just over 100 bolted routes put up since an international climbing event in 2019.
Practical
Approx: placed at the mairie, the booking point for guided climbing (Julien Mai's son organises climbing and via ferrata with all safety gear). Climbers with their own kit used a downloaded topo and found bolts and lower-offs in great condition (2022). The via ferrata is a series of wires and steps at height around the cliffs. One cruiser report also mentions climbing the rock face on the eastern beach. Costs and minimum age not published; ask ahead.
