Makatea Cliff-Top Hikes

15° 50.2′ S · 148° 15.4′ W

Walks across the jungle-covered plateau to the old windmill lookout, the Belvedere viewpoints, the phosphate pits and down to the beach, reef and cliffs of the eastern shore.

Practical

Coordinate is the 'Ancienne Eolienne' viewpoint in OpenStreetMap, above the 80 m deep pit. There is one main road and a few smaller tracks, so you can't get lost; it is a short walk uphill from the landing to the village, then onward. Wear stout shoes (sharp makatea rock), carry water and stay well back from unfenced pits and cliff edges.

Best for

Big views over the Pacific from an uplifted reef
