In December, Mangareva's gardens are heavy with lychees and other fruit, part of the reward for spending the southern summer in the Gambier.

Locals are generous and often give or trade fruit, including pamplemousse, avocados, oranges, limes, papaya, mango and bananas. Bring baked goods or useful items in return. Taravai's gardeners sell produce year-round.
