Atuona to Tahauku Walk

9° 48.3′ S · 139° 2.1′ W · approximate

The daily commute between Tahauku harbour and Atuona village: an easy road walk round the headland, or a shorter scramble across the black-sand beach and up a goat path.

Practical

Approximate position: the midpoint on the beach shortcut. The 2026 brief says the village is a 20-minute walk from the port. Cruiser timings: the shortcut across the beach takes about 30 minutes; the road adds about 25 minutes but is flat and easy, though unlit at night (May 2019). Shortcut: from the harbour take the dirt road down to the beach, cross the little stream (wet feet or stepping stones), then climb the steep path straight up the hill on the left. If wet, walk NW on level ground to rejoin the paved road. Skip it after heavy rain or with a loaded cart. Nonos on the beach. Hitchhiking usually works except noon-2 pm, Saturday afternoon, Sunday and after 5:30 pm (2019); shops often drive big purchases back.
