Ana Tupapau Cave and Blowhole (Rurutu)

22° 30.5′ S · 151° 21.1′ W · approximate

A wild south-west coast walk from the hamlet of Narui: a blowhole in the reef (Trou du Souffleur), a long white beach, and caves in the cliffs to the north.

Practical

Position is the Narui hamlet trailhead (OSM). Pitufa: hitch from Avera up past a lookout to Narui; a dirt road leads down to a few houses at the beach; the blowhole is a gap in the reef where waves break (they saw little with 2-3 m SW swell). Walk north along the beach to the cliffs; they found small caves but were unsure which was Ana Tupapa'u. Finding the bigger cave may need low tide, no swell and a local guide. You can also start from the Avera side and walk south.
