Odysseus Cave (Odisejeva Špilja)

42° 43.8′ N · 17° 32.6′ E

A collapsed sea cave on Mljet's south coast below Babino Polje, open to the sky, where the light turns the water bright blue. Local legend says Odysseus was held here by the nymph Calypso.

Practical

Coordinate is the cave entrance (OSM). The way in is from the sea, at sea level, so only go in calm conditions; with any swell getting out of the water is hard. By land, a gravel road from the west end of Babino Polje leads to a car park and a zigzag path down to the sea and round the rim of the collapsed roof (about 20–30 minutes, steep and rocky). Free; bring a torch. The light inside is best around midday. The south coast is exposed and steep-to; do not leave a yacht unattended off it.

Best for

A swim into a sunlit cave on a flat day

Season

Jun–Sep, calm days only
