Utila Lagoon & Mangrove Canal

16° 5.3′ N · 86° 55.1′ W

Behind Utila Town, a mangrove lagoon is joined by a canal to the north shore, which splits the island east from west. You can paddle a kayak or SUP from the south coast right through the island to Turtle Harbour and the wild north side.

Practical

The coordinate is the Lower Lagoon, from OpenStreetMap. OSM also maps the Upper Lagoon and the canal's northern reach (about 16.1075, -86.9163). Wikivoyage says kayaks can be rented at Coral View, near the southern canal entrance, or at several dive shops. Guided trips run through the mangrove channel to the north shore and down to the cays. We found no published notes on taking a yacht's dinghy through; treat it as a paddling route and check headroom and depth locally. The island and its cays are a protected Ramsar wetland. Expect sandflies and mosquitoes at dawn and dusk.
