Utila Cays (Pigeon & Jewel Cay)

16° 3.8′ N · 86° 58.1′ W

Off Utila's south-west tip, two tiny cays joined by a bridge are packed edge-to-edge with brightly painted houses — a Garifuna-and-islander fishing village that feels like a floating town — with palm-fringed Water Cay nearby for swimming.

Practical

Coordinate is Pigeon Cay from OpenStreetMap (Jewel Cay 16.06402, -86.96510; Water Cay 16.05948, -86.97577). Wikipedia notes the island and its cays are a protected Ramsar site. Visit by dinghy in calm weather or by water taxi from Utila Town; Pigeon Cay has a small clinic and hardware store. For an overnight anchorage nearby, see Utila Cays Anchorage (Pigeon/Suc-Suc Cay, west Utila), about a mile north-west of the village in turtle grass; otherwise come by tender or water taxi from the town harbour (20-30 minutes). Locals also call Pigeon Cay 'Suc-Suc Cay'. No ATM on the cays.
