Spawning Aggregation Closures (Grouper & Snapper)

16° 53.5′ N · 87° 41.1′ W

Belize protects its fish spawning aggregation sites - Glover's northeast point, Sandbore, Caye Bokel, Gladden Spit, Nicholas Caye, Seal Caye and others - where groupers and snappers mass around winter and spring full moons; several are closed to all fishing.

Practical

Glover's Reef: the Seasonal Closure Zone is closed to all fishing December to February and the northeast Nassau grouper site permanently since 2002 (Wikipedia). Lighthouse Reef: grouper spawn December to February just outside the Sandbore reef (VYA). Sapodilla: Nicholas Caye, Rise and Fall Bank and Seal Caye sites protected by SI 161 of 2003 (management plan). Gladden Spit: snapper spawn around the March-June full moons (whale-shark season). Position: Northern Glover's Reef Spawning Aggregation on OpenStreetMap.
