Rendezvous Point Anchorage (Turneffe North)

17° 32.6′ N · 87° 49.0′ W · approximate

A quiet lee anchorage off Rendezvous Point, the northwest tip of the big mangrove landmass in northern Turneffe, used by crewed catamarans as the overnight stop for snorkelling and dinghy exploring of the northern atoll, far from the dive-boat traffic of the south end.

Practical

Position approximate: placed about 400 m west of Rendezvous Point, a cape mapped on OpenStreetMap at 17.54741, -87.81267, where the shoreline runs north-south along about 87.812 W with open water to the west; sound your own spot. Yacht Warriors' northern Belize itinerary anchors 'off Rendezvous Point or Soldier Caye on the protected western side' and drops the dinghy from there (Soldier Caye is not mapped on OpenStreetMap). No published depth or holding data was found: approach in good light with the sun high, a bow lookout and preferably a local skipper - Moorings bareboats may not leave the barrier reef without one. Turneffe has no stores, fuel or water; dive buoys are too small for yachts, so drop the anchor on sand and keep the chain off coral (Ventura Yacht Agency). Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve rules and fees apply (see that entry). Protection is from the east only: leave in a norther or a westerly.

Best for

A quiet night in northern Turneffe for snorkelling and flats fishing

Season

Settled E-SE trades, roughly Feb-May; untenable in northers and westerlies
