Placencia Lagoon

16° 33.6′ N · 88° 22.8′ W · approximate

The long, mangrove-fringed lagoon behind the Placencia peninsula, home to manatees, dolphins and rays and a nursery for some ray species - good canoe and kayak birding, and the area's protected water for shallow-draft boats.

Practical

Position approximate: mid-lagoon west of the peninsula near the Sunsail base (OpenStreetMap). For shallower boats the lagoon offers miles of well-protected anchoring with several mangrove hurricane holes (Noonsite); entry is limited to about 7-8 ft draft. Hummingbird Marina reports its channel dredged to 7 ft and tides under 12 inches (marinas.com reviews). Watch for manatees - go slow.
