Smith Bay Harbour Anchorage

24° 19.9′ N · 75° 28.6′ W

A tiny dredged basin behind a west-facing entrance with lighted range markers and red and green channel lights. It is Cat Island's only snug all-round hidey-hole outside Hawk's Nest, and the base for the Customs and Immigration office.

Practical

The entrance faces west with plenty of depth; turn sharply south once inside. Anchor in 6-15 ft of muddy sand with decent holding. There is room for only about two 40-ft boats, so most Bahamian-moor. A 2015 boat Med-moored to the rough concrete dock for $20 (verify locally). It is protected even from the west, which makes it a cold-front refuge if you can get in early. The mailboat calls weekly (Thursday about 9:00 am per a 2014 report), and you may have to move. A water tap was behind the yellow building about 100 yd from the ramp (2012). A decent grocery is across the road. Good cell signal; land pets on the western shore or at the concrete ramp.

Best for

Cold-front shelter and clearing in, for one or two boats

Season

Year-round shelter for small numbers; arrive early before a front
