North & South Marine Parks (Andros)

24° 52.5′ N · 77° 53.3′ W

Two Bahamas National Trust marine parks on the Andros Barrier Reef protecting patch reefs, lagoons and the main reef from the shore to the drop-off into the Tongue of the Ocean.

Practical

Position from Wikipedia (park centroid; established 2002, IUCN II). BNT: about 8,500 acres together, boat access only, no-take zone, over 164 species of fish and coral, including Nassau grouper, snappers, spiny lobster and queen conch. Highlights named by BNT: The Wall, and 'The Flat', where coral heads reach the surface at low tide. BNT recommends Small Hope Bay Lodge and Forfar Field Station for diving. The Andros Lighthouse Yacht Club adds that nothing may be taken from Andros National Sea Park waters by Bahamian law. Precise boundaries are not published on the BNT page: assume no fishing, spearing or lobstering anywhere on the reef between Staniard Creek and Fresh Creek until you confirm locally.
