Spanish Wells and Harbour Island sit regularly in the path of Atlantic hurricanes; Hurricane Andrew (Category 5, 1992) brought an 18-ft surge to Eleuthera and Valentines marina was rebuilt after Dorian.

Coordinate approx: Spanish Wells harbour. Season June 1-November 30, peaking mid-August to mid-October. Noonsite notes a hurricane hole at the western end of Spanish Wells harbour where boats are secured to mangroves — local knowledge and early arrival needed; R & B Boatyard can haul boats to 90 ft. Many insurers require boats north of a set latitude or hauled for the season. Few cruisers stay in the area in season.
