Castle Island Anchorage

22° 7.9′ N · 74° 19.7′ W

An anchorage in the lee of Castle Island, the low cay off the south-west tip of Acklins crowned by its 1868 lighthouse; better protected than the chart suggests, with excellent visibility for snorkelling and a shipwreck nearby. Pirates once used the island as a base to raid ships in the passage.

Practical

noforeignland position N 22°07.860' W 074°19.736', good holding in sand; rolly in brisk winds and any northerly component brings swell (move to Mudian Harbour). Surprisingly good cell signal. Beach landing. Last stop before the Mira Por Vos passage, Hogsty Reef or Great Inagua.

Best for

Lighthouse, wreck snorkelling and a jumping-off point south
