Bight of Eleuthera pot-buoy lines

25° 5.6′ N · 76° 16.0′ W

Long strings of small white trap buoys laid across the Bight of Eleuthera, especially on the run between Governor's Harbour and Cape Eleuthera, that catch keels and propellers.

Practical

Position from the ActiveCaptain 'Crab pot lines' hazard marker. Reports: about a dozen east-west strings, 6-inch round white buoys every 200 ft, each string at least half a mile long and a quarter mile apart, crossing the Governor's Harbour to Cape Eleuthera course; thought to appear after April 1 when lobster season closes (ActiveCaptain). Stone-crab trap floats also reported up to 3 miles off the west shore from Gregory Town south, past Tom's Rock and Alice Town (2015 to 2016), and further strings west of Savannah Sound (2017). One boat wrapped a line around its keel in 2014. Cross strings at the midpoint between buoys, keep a bow lookout and avoid night passages on the Bight.

Best for

Planning a Bight passage without a wrapped prop

Season
